The Wall in Germany

Today we celebrate the day of the reunion of the east and west Germany, it´s 18 years ago, but for me it´s like yesterday. I was born in the GDR and it doesn´t matter what ever happend in the East, all bad circumstances, I had a great childhood which I`ll never forget. This day, when the people climbed the wall and nobody shoot them, I was sitting by my friends of my childhood. We watched TV, but we were not able to understand, nobody knew what it means for the future. I was 12 years old.

How was living in the GDR? First: The social life was great. Everybody helped you, all people in the village were friends (only one person how was STASI-member, but that´s another story), everybody had a job and we children went to the kindergarden or school, when it was finished, they did homework or played with us till our parents arrived from work. That was the good side of the regime, nobody had to suffer hunger and nobody were homeless.

But the most was very negative: It was forbidden to travel in another countrys. That means: We had to spent every vacation in the GDR, in this little country, not very exciting. My uncle tried to immigrate to the West, he had to spent a long time in prison. For him it was a terrible time, he doesn´t speak about this.

The STASI and his members made our life to hell. We had one person in our village. She killed our cat´s, I never will forget this. I growed up in a little village with 13 houses. In the GDR you hadn´t any phonecell. So got one familiy a phone in their house. For some month we were the family. That means, all people of the village rang at our door when they wanted to phone. But with this phone the regime wanted to force my parents to go to the RED party, but they didn´t. So happend this story: At one night the cutted the wire and at the next day we had to gave the phone back. This are little things, but this are the things of my childhood. In the GDR I never had the possibility to make my A-Level or to study, because my parents were not in the party.

Now the choclate and fruit story: We had never to suffer hunger but we had very seldom the possibility to enjoy special things. At two times in the year my mom had the possibility to buy bananas, what for a great happening: She stood in a long, long chain of woman who were waiting. When she arrived the end she got: one banana for dad, one for herself, two for my brother and two for me. That´s all. Therefore she waited a long time. We only knew Apples and the things which growed in our garden. And sometimes we got some Cuba-Oranges which were terrible. And what´s about the choclate? We got only choclate to christmas because it was too expensive.  When the wall was fallen down I went to a supermarket and I bought all kind of choclate and ate them. Today I do it sometimes again, I don´t know why. It´s like my grandma: She collected a lot of food in her house like sugar, coffee and other important things. She has the second world war - syndrom.
